10 Memorable Movies You Loved As A Kid But Found Stupid As An Adult
As children, we often form strong attachments to movies that captivate our imagination and sense of wonder. However, as we grow older and our perspectives evolve, some of these once-beloved films can lose their enchantment and be seen in a new light. What seemed like a magical and thrilling adventure back then might reveal itself as simplistic or even slightly absurd when viewed through the lens of adulthood.
Cruel Intentions
One person said, “I haven’t actually rewatched it, but Cruel Intentions. Growing up, I was so obsessed with it, but I feel like if I watched it now, I’d hate it. I hate that Ryan Phillippe’s character is shown as sympathetic. He literally assaults Selma Blair’s character, and it’s just glossed over. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is the real “villain” even though she’s no different than Ryan’s character, but he gets redemption, and she doesn’t because he’s a guy. The whole thing is super gross.”
Blade
A second person shared, “Blade. Don’t get me wrong, still a decent movie, and I love comic movies. Blade was certainly ahead of its time, but I never realized how cheesy it was. And the one-liners? They had me cracking up. “Some people are always trying to ice-skate uphill.”
Mrs. Doubtfire
A third person added, “Mrs Doubtfire. Sally Field was 100% in the right, but it’s hard to see that as a kid. Robin Williams is so loveable and funny, but the premise is kind of absurd. The movie shows he was a bad husband and an irresponsible parent, and then deceiving his ex-wife and getting the kids to cover for him… yikes.”
Uncle Buck
This user commented, “Uncle Buck. That movie is terrible. Can’t believe I loved it as a kid on cable 30 years ago. I don’t think I’ll be showing my kids this one.”
Blazing Saddles
A participant shared, “Blazing Saddles. I convinced a room full of Canadian college students on alternative spring break to watch it a few years back. They were horrified. I was embarrassed. I know the schtick is making fun of racism, but it comes across as awfully racist.
Scream
A well-liked comment said, “Scream. My partner had never seen Scream, and it was streaming for free, so we watched it. I did not realize or remember how much creepy coercion was happening in this flick. It was scarier than the serial killing. Neve Campbell’s character deals with people dying at school, her mom’s death anniversary coming up, an attack by a killer, and a jerk journalist hounding her. All Skeet can think of is when they will get a rated “NC-17 relationship.” So, so dumb.”
Ace Ventura
Someone said, “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, sadly. This is a rough one because there are many parts I still find funny, but how he reacts to the character being trans, and the entire movie’s presentation of the subject matter is so over the top and offensive that I can’t watch it anymore.”
Home On The Range
A poster commented, “Home on the Range. I used to watch it all the time as a kid, but it was a miserable experience as an adult. The humor is so unfunny and forced. The characters are really annoying and loud. It’s one of the worst animated Disney movies.”
The Cat In The Hat
One user recalled, “The Cat In The Hat. I wanted the cat to visit me when I was a kid! I rewatched it with my nephew, and as an adult, I now found the cat to be very annoying, and there is a lot of adult humor that kind of really turned me off.”
Spy Kids
This commenter mentioned, “Spy Kids. So awful! Everything from the graphics, acting, and storyline. I get it’s a kid’s movie, and it holds a special place in many adults’ hearts, but man, was that an awful movie!”
Percy Jackson
A well-liked post said, “Percy Jackson And The Lightening Thief. As a kid, I loved that movie. It was like Harry Potter but better. I read the books years later, and frankly, the movie doesn’t do justice to the book. I’m not sure I’ll ever watch the movies again because I don’t want to ruin my love of the books.”
Sleepover
This participant shared, “I rewatched the movie Sleepover recently because I loved it as a teen. However, I realized how cringy and awful it is watching as an adult (older guys dating 14-year-olds, fat-shaming, etc).” It didn’t exactly promote self-love either.”
Home Alone 3
A poster commented, “I watched the Home Alone movies with my kids last Christmas. We stupidly watched the 3rd one. It was such a cash grab and literally killed the franchise for me. I still love the first two, and they’ll always be Christmas classics to me, but in my household, we will no longer recognize the 3rd one as canon to the series.”
The Land Before Time
This user added, “The Land Before Time, I was obsessed with dinosaurs and this movie growing up. (Yes, I’m that old.) Now as an adult, I realized where and when my anxiety started! What an awful and traumatic kid’s movie that was. I feel like many 80s “kids” movies were anxiety and sadness ridden after rewatching as an adult.”
Alvin & The Chipmunks
Finally, a participant said, “Alvin and The Chipmunks. The shrillness of their voices! I couldn’t take it as an adult, lol.”
